Open Music has assembled an 11-piece band of strings, winds, percussion, electronics, and voices to play pieces inspired by play. John Zorn’s COBRA from 1984 is built around a raucously complicated set of instructions, doled out by a mad conductor of sorts who is variously obeyed and undermined by the improvising ensemble. Jason Turnipseed uses a synaesthetic system of colors and cues to render drone-y and trance-y patterns through the band. And Bri Wiegand’s Ah Chute mobilizes the ups and downs of Chutes and Ladders to build a changing web of sonic interaction. A show rich in sounds and surprises, not to be missed!
Open Music is an ensemble presenting works by composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, improvised and original music, adaptions of theatrical pieces, and multimedia collaborations.
